Legislative Agenda
The Associated Students Executive Board approved the 2019-2020 Legislative Agenda 7-0-0. The AS Legislative Affairs Council created the agenda which outlines the topics that will be covered at Western Lobby Day on Jan. 19 and 20.
Grace Drechsel, VP for governmental affairs, reviewed the agenda with the board. The legislative agenda covers college affordability, student loan forgiveness, support for undocumented students, funding for ethnic studies, mental health and wellness, environmental protections and climate justice and support for survivors. The agenda also focuses on dedicated revenue with suggestions of how to fund the programs and projects in the document.
Trever Mullins, VP for sustainability, suggested spelling out the names of offices, such as Consultation and Sexual Assault Support, which are commonly refered to by their acronyms, like CASAS, so the agenda is more accessible to the Washington State legislators.
Sargun Handa, senator at-large, suggested the section titled “supporting survivors” be renamed “support for survivors of sexual assault,” to be more clear what students are advocating for this support.
The board approved the agenda contingent on these changes.
Restructure Committee Charter
The board approved an updated Restructure Committee Charter 6-0-1. Selome Zerai, VP for activities, presented the revised charter, which now includes the task of creating a new subcommittee, which will evaluate the newly created Finance Council during week six of winter and spring quarters.
The AS Student Senate approved the Finance Council charter in their meeting on Dec. 6. The senate reviewed the charter during their first meeting of the quarter on Nov. 22, just after the board passed it 7-0-0. The Finance Council will act as a consolidated body to manage AS funds, according to the process document.
