Official Guidance Resolution
On June 4, the Associated Students Student Senate held its last meeting of the year. AS Communication Director Hunter Stuehm presented the AS Communications Office’s new official guidance on how the AS Executive Board and senate can create resolutions. The document includes guidelines on when different kinds of resolutions are appropriate, a sample resolution and reasoning for why AS governing bodies use resolutions.
Stuehm said while the senate and board don’t need to vote on the document, he wanted to include them in the process so future senate and board members can use the guide in the future.
AS Bylaws and Changes to the Bylaws
The senate approved revisions to the senate by-laws with a vote of 14 in favor and zero against or abstaining. The revisions seek to clarify what happens when a senator changes majors, or leaves the college they were elected to represent.
Adah Barenburg, senate pro-tempore, brought up the by-law revisions because earlier in spring quarter, she discovered their vague guidance when a senator dropped one of their majors so they could graduate on time. The senate’s revisions included directing the senator to send a letter of resignation within five days. The senate pro-tempore will then decide to hold a special election or hire a new representative. If there is work to be done in the senator’s absence, it will be redistributed to other senators.
The senate also added that if a senator drops their major during spring quarter, where there would not be enough time to find a replacement, the senate will take a ¾ vote to decide if the senator can continue in their role.
