The Associated Students Executive Board met on Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 for their first meeting of the 2020-21 academic year.
AS Elections Code Edits
Senate Pro-tempore Sargun Handa and Elections Coordinator Mario Alem presented an information item regarding eliminating the petition signature requirements for AS Student Senate candidates from 50 signatures to zero. They expressed a desire to reduce the petition requirement given student experiences during last spring’s elections, the requirement dissuading students from running and the inherent exclusion of students without access to the internet during the pandemic.
Handa clarified that this change to the code would only apply to the senate elections this fall and the Board would need to revisit the topic for the spring elections if they felt it was necessary.
The Board agreed to table the discussion and participate in an e-vote on Sept. 29, after the Elections Advisory Committee met and discussed the revisions. They made plans to revisit the topic at the next meeting to update students on the results of their e-vote.
AS Committee Recommendations
Courtney Yoshiyama, Morgan Koch and Travis Felver were recommended for appointment to the AS Elections Advisory Committee and Jade Hedeen was recommended for appointment to the Counseling, Health, and Wellness Committee.
Other Business
VP for Student Services Carson Brock brought up the idea of the Board holding collaborative office hours several times a week in which three members of the Board would hold office hours together. The rest of the Board members agreed to set up a poll to find ideal times to schedule and hold these group office hours.
