The Associated Students Executive Board met on Friday, Oct. 9 for their third meeting of the 2020-21 academic year. AS President Abdul Malik Ford and VP for Diversity Ranulfo Molina were absent from the meeting.
AS Election Code Changes
Senate Pro-tempore Sargun Handa and AS Elections Coordinator Mario Alem introduced and explained the changes that the Elections Advisory Committee passed regarding the AS Election Code.
Notable changes to the code included the lowering petition requirement to run in AS Student Senate elections from 50 signatures to zero, shortening the voting period from two weeks to five to seven days and clarifying the language regarding candidate endorsement with specific clarification that events do not need to happen for an AS club or hall council to endorse a candidate.
All of the changes to the code can be found here.
The board voted unanimously to pass and approve the edits to the AS Election Code.
Referendum to be Included on the Fall Ballot
Handa gave a presentation regarding initiatives, referenda and amendments and how they work within the AS elections.
She also presented a referendum to be included in the upcoming elections to gather information about when students would like to vote on student senate candidates.
The board voted unanimously to include a referendum reading, “Do you believe AS Student Senate Elections should be held in the Spring?” on the ballot in the fall 2020 elections.
For more information on the referendum and more, check out the AS Review’s voter guide.
