Student Leaders from Across the State Meet to Discuss Student Issues

October 17th, via Zoom: The Washington Student Association, an organization that represents 150,000 students at all of Washington’s public four year universities, is hosting their biannual General Assembly meeting virtually via Zoom this Saturday. The meeting, which is hosted in the fall and in the spring, brings together student leaders from all public universities in the state of Washington to discuss important issues and formalize their legislative agenda.

“A unified student body focused around a collective agenda is more important than ever as our representatives in Olympia continue to discuss austerity measures. We must protect and expand investments to higher education” Said Zackary Turner, Executive Director of the Washington Student Association.

Students and student government representatives at all of the 15 member campuses had the opportunity to submit proposals to the General Assembly of the Washington Student Association. The proposals, if affirmed by the General Assembly, will decide the WSA’s legislative and advocacy priorities for the year.

This year’s proposals include replacing a teaching assessment called the edTPA, eliminating the SAT and ACT from the admissions process, securing state financial aid for graduate students, mandating diversity, equity and inclusion training for students, expanding Title IX protections, and much more.

“We cannot let this pandemic blindside us from creating the more equitable, inclusive, and accessible higher education system that all of Washington’s students deserve.” Said Turner.

Each of the proposals will be rigorously evaluated and debated by student leaders before being added to the WSA’s legislative agenda.

Students can go to https://www.wastudents.org/ to learn more about the WSA and get involved with their student government association on campus.

Headquartered in Olympia, the Washington Student Association is the official nonpartisan, statewide voice for students attending a public four year university in the state of Washington.
