The Associated Students Executive Board met on Friday, Oct. 30 for their sixth meeting of the 2020-21 academic year.
Executive Board Resolution
Senate Pro-tempore Sargun Handa presented information about a petition she set up in order to speak out regarding her experiences attempting to get AS Student Senate representation at Western’s Board of Trustees meetings.
Handa created the petition because the Senate Pro-tempore currently does not receive recurring invitations to Board of Trustee meetings and she seeks to change that. Handa created a document thoroughly explaining the experiences that led to her creation of the petition.
The Board made plans to continue conversation with student leaders at other Washington universities to gain information about their experiences and involvement with their respective Board of Trustees.
AS President Abdul Malik Ford shared plans for a meeting with the chair of the Board of Trustees that would take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3 to discuss the matter as well.
Student Senate Anti-Blackness Training
Handa presented preliminary plans to create an anti-racism and anti-blackness training program for the future student senators as a direct response to the Black Student Organizations’ demands for this type of training.
Handa currently hopes to create a training for the senate specifically. She plans to invite other BIPOC AS student employees and leaders to speak with BIPOC senators to share resources and experiences while white senators do the anti-blackness training.
