A series of photos with people posing for Style Spotlight. Kaeson Warnes // Wavelength

As the weather cools down and the Washington seasons start to muddle, WWU students begin to bundle in their comfiest layers in preparation for their trek to campus. With unpredictable downpours, winds that whip straight to your core, and occasional summer-like lunches; fall sure is no joke in the Pacific Northwest. Welcome back to Style Spotlight: Fall Edition, where we captured your unique and practical day-to-day fashion.
Previous Wavelength photographer, Sophia Nunn, forged the path for the first Style Spotlight in Spring Quarter 2022. Since then, the end of every quarter brings a buzz into the Wavelength office, as anticipation grows for its return. Each member of Wavelength plays a vital role in keeping this project flourishing and afloat. To honor this creative tradition, I decided to take Style Spotlight into my own hands, and am so grateful to have the opportunity to continue this legacy. Although the face behind the camera may be different, the goal remains the same: celebrating the self-expression of students through fashion on campus.
Anxiety and excitement set in, as I approached day one of Style Spotlight. I know the awkwardness of posing for a picture all too well—hence why I tend to stay behind the camera. I decided my main goal was to find a way to break through people’s nerves and provide a comfortable space for self-expression. As Tim, Lily, and I lugged our gear into Red Square, I rehearsed all the different ways I might ask people for their picture. My fears quickly eased when the first student approached, grinning widely, already knowing exactly what we were up to. Soon after, I found myself in a natural groove by casually striking up light conversation with people about their outfits and easing them into a pose of their choosing. By the end of the final day, I felt fulfilled and inspired by just how eager everyone was to show off their personality and style.
Thank you to all who helped make this happen. I look forward to seeing all your wonderful smiles again in winter quarter!
