On May 31, the AS Outback Farm is putting on an “End of the Year Picnic” at, you guessed it, the Outback Farm! Co-hosted by Fairhaven Go For The Green 2017 and the BT and Fairhaven Eco-Reps, the event looks to provide a start to summer with a night of sustainable food and education.
From 6 to 9 p.m., students are encouraged to come by the Outback Farm, located just between Fairhaven and BT, to indulge in some locally grown, sustainable food and engage in discussions about everything from environmental impacts of organic, local food farming to the economic availability, feasibility, and easiness of sustainable growing.
While the ultimate intention of the picnic is to spread awareness and understanding of the environmental impacts of sustainable versus unsustainable food, there certainly will be free food for those who come. Dinner will include sandwiches as well as other assorted potluck-style foods, with vegan and gluten free options. All food will additionally be plant-based and, naturally, local and organic. It should be noted, however, that the event is “BYOU&P,” as in bring your own utensils and plates. Everything else will be provided by the Outback.
The Outback Farm, founded in 1972, is a five acre site that is maintained and run by students. Their goals are to provide teaching and development for sustainable food and growing to any and all students. Though the quarter is coming to a close, the Outback hosts work parties, where volunteers can come and help out with whatever may be needed in the garden.
