Dear reader,

Happy birthday! Whether your birthday is today or tomorrow, you’re probably having a one-of-a-kind birthday. And for many of us, including myself, you’re probably having a birthday in isolation due to COVID-19.

However, I hope you realize that among all this uncertainty and chaos, you deserve a moment for yourself. While this birthday may be different from past years, without the company of friends, family or an obnoxious amount of cake, take a moment to remember that you aren’t alone. Even if you’re miles or states away from the people you are normally with. Remember that you aren’t alone in this. There are about 20.8 million people celebrating your birthday with you, so there are plenty of people to celebrate with.

Since we’re all trying to figure out how to live life in isolation right now, making plans for your birthday will help keep you busy and allow you to enjoy your day.

While celebrating your birthday during a pandemic, it’s important to continue following the rules of social distancing to keep others safe. However, FaceTiming, calling and texting people throughout the day will help you feel connected to people around you.

If possible, go for a little walk, in an area where there aren’t a lot of people. Letting yourself move your body and explore trails and paths around your house is a nice way to enjoy time out of the house.

Next, practice some type of self-care. Whether that is reading, dancing, music or art, taking time out of your day for self-care is important and will hopefully help you feel better. Put on your favorite outfit and do whatever makes you happy.

For food, prepare in advance to get ingredients at the grocery store to make your favorite foods. Everyone has a favorite comfort food, so there is no better time than your birthday to cook or bake it. Also, cooking and baking is a great time to talk to a friend or put on your favorite music or movie. If you aren’t that into cooking or baking, order food from your favorite local restaurant and they can deliver it to you in a safe way that doesn’t require physical contact.

Eat cake. That’s it. Just make sure you get cake from a local business or buy one from the store. No one should have a birthday without some birthday cake. Also, make sure to get some candles so it’s a proper party.

Be honest with how you’re feeling. Many people are feeling lonely during this time since we aren’t allowed to be around our loved ones. Usually you are surrounded by people on your birthday and have plans to celebrate, so it’s understandable if you feel disappointed. If you’re feeling down, call a friend or family member to talk about it.

While many of us are spending our birthday in a way we didn’t expect, that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate. Taking the day for yourself and focusing on who and what is important to you will help make this birthday enjoyable and special. Remembering that none of us are alone in this, even if we aren’t physically with one another. It’s important to keep in mind that we are surrounded by people who are just six feet or a phone call away.
