The Associated Students Student Senate met on Wednesday, Feb. 3 for their sixth meeting of the 2020-21 academic year.

Black Student Organization Demand Updates

Senate Pro-tempore Sargun Handa formally proposed abolishing the AS Executive Board’s federal lobbying trip and will be continuing conversations with the board about the process of abolishing the trip and reallocating the funds to the Black Student Coalition.

Senator for the College of the Environment Laura Wagner shared that AS President Abdul Malik Ford and Handa appointed her and AS Personnel director Kaylan Rocamora to the Legacy Review Task Force. 

Wagner also said that she continues to work on the Huxley name change effort and developed a survey for students to share their thoughts and opinions about the name change.

Western Intersectional Lobby Day Agenda

Ethnic Student Center Assistant Director for Club Logistics Daniela Rodriguez presented the ESC portion of the final WILD agenda. Their agenda includes the following items: Equitable Access to Healthcare, Make Juneteenth a Legal Holiday and Equitable Living and Housing.

Student Advocacy and Identity Resource Center Representation & Outreach Coordinator Mariam-Renee Wolters presented the SAIRC portion of the final WILD agenda. Their agenda includes the following items: Supporting Student’s Basic Needs, Creating Successful and Stable Futures for Foster Youth with Disabilities, Ensuring Equity in Healthcare, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Supporting Our Uncodumented Community and Mixed Status Families at WWU and in Washington State.

Wolters also presented the Disability Outreach Center’s portion of the WILD agenda. Their agenda includes: Increase Access to Healthcare and Increase Accessibility in Public Spaces.

The senate approved the WILD agenda unanimously.
