The Associated Students Executive Board met on Friday, Feb. 26 for their eighteenth meeting of the 2020-21 academic year.

AS Constitutional Changes

Senate Pro-tempore Sargun Handa submitted a change to Article V of the AS Constitution that would officially move student senate elections to spring as well as adjust the term lengths and dates.

The change to the constitution passed four in favor, zero against and one abstaining.

AS President Job Description

AS President Abdul Malik Ford presented proposed changes to the job description of the AS President.

He included minor changes such as replacing “Board of Directors” with “Executive Board” and other updates for clarity and brevity. Ford also included larger possible changes and questions such as asking about whether or not the AS President really is the “lead executive officer” and proposing changes to the language describing “preferred qualifications” for the position.

Ford started conversation about the summer work requirement for both his position and for the senate pro-tempore position. He said that he doesn’t want the requirement to be a barrier for students to run and noted that the summer work is typically very light and focused on training. Suggestions for changing the requirement included removing it, making it optional and including an option for other board members to work more during the summer if they wanted.

Letter to Western’s President

VP for Diversity Ranulfo Molina presented a letter he, Ford and Handa worked on asking for the creation of a Chief Diversity Officer position within the President’s cabinet that would help work specifically on achieving Western’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
