Celebrating APIDA Month and Sharing my Story

Produced and Edited by: Abbey Raynes

The Acronym standing for Asian, Pacific islander, Desi American Heritage Month, this month is all about celebrating these identities! As an adopted Chinese American, it can be hard understanding and embracing my multi-faceted identity. Not exactly knowing where I should be in my community, I thought I would share my personal story to show how I’m celebrating this year and how eclectic the APIDA grouping is. So, this year I decided to make a traditional Chinese dish called congee/conjee as a way to honor this month, as I talk about my life and provide some insight. Representing more than 50 ethnic groups, APIDA comes in all different shapes and sizes. Though my background is unique to me, this is just the tip of the iceberg for the thousands of stories and individuals experiences that are in this grouping of people. Western will be holding a variety of lectures, events, and celebrations that uplifts these different stories on campus. Check out some of the events that Western is providing and have a happy APIDA month everyone!
