AS Student Senate: College of Business and Economics

Michael Protska

My name is Michael Prostka and I’m running to represent the College of Business and Economics as a Student Senator. Here at WWU, I’ve been involved with all manner of campus activity, including my time working with a total of 7 committees and clubs. I’ve also spent the last two years working within University Residences as an elected Residence Hall Association (RHA) board member, and prior to that, a SHADO Hall Council Representative. As one of your senators, I will continue to encourage WWU administration to adopt a self-operated dining system, sustainably reinvest money tied to fossil fuels, and support RAs in their effort to allocate more resources towards mental health services. I check my email like it’s a newborn baby, reach out to me now and throughout the year with questions.

Jona Akelipa

My name is Jona Akelipa and I’m running for one of the College of Business and Economics (CBE) AS Senate seats. I believe the AS Senate should be a vehicle for students to collectively organize and find solutions to systemic problems faced by the colleges and the campus at large, as well as serve as a counterbalance to the power asymmetry college administrations hold over individual students. Ultimately, my objective is to give a platform to all of your voices, especially those voices that have remained largely unheard. I want more affordable textbooks, compensation for tutors, and required curriculum regarding racial and sexual discrimination, neocolonialism, and sustainability in the business environment. Previously, I have served as the president of Western’s Financial Management Association, steering representative of the South Asian Student Association, and am currently an active member of the Filipino American Student Association, and Vietnamese Student Association.

Nick Makrakis

I am a hard-working senior majoring in Economics and Political Science. Throughout my time at Western I have met a wide-variety of people which has given me perspective on the issues both students and administrators face on a daily basis. If elected my aim is to promote an increased involvement in the decision-making processes that shape our university. As senator my goal is to help cultivate an inclusive environment on campus, where the voice of the entire student body is heard and represented through the decisions of our administration. Serving on behalf of my fellow students, I commit to keeping an open dialogue in which you can feel comfortable voicing YOUR concerns, and assured that they’ll be represented. It takes active participation to make change, so let your voice be heard and help me shape Western into a place that reflects who YOU are and what YOU stand for.

Yajie Wang

Hi Vikings! I’m Yajie. I am running for the CBE student senator because I believe in the students’ power and I want our voice to be heard. Throughout my three quarters at Western, I have noticed that our student body is extremely underrepresented. We do not have a say in making decisions that directly affect us. This situation needs to be changed immediately. As a student representative, I will engage students in university-wide decisions, such as budget-spending plan, planning special bonding events for students. As your representative, I will frequently talk to students, get to know students’ real interests and bring them before the ASWWU Student Senate. I have never had chance to hold any office position before. But I do not want to miss this precious opportunity. Let’s work together to make some fascinating changes at Western!
