AS Student Senate: Huxley College of the Environment

Maya Noesen

If awarded this position, I will support increased funding to ‘bottleneck’ classes and increase interdisciplinary activities at Western. Bottleneck classes are a huge problem that result in students having to delay their graduation, putting them into more student debt due to the additional housing and tuitions fees. By increasing funding, Western can start to address this problem so that students can graduate on time. College is a time to dabble in various fields that interest you. However, many students feel as though they cannot afford to take classes outside of their programs. I would like to see a series of ‘snapshot’ events implemented that let students experience what different fields have to offer. For other concerns you have, just email me or come find me in the common spaces of Huxley and we will make sure they are addressed.

As Huxley’s student senator I will prioritize increasing diversity and inclusion of students and staff. I will work to raise the voice of those who do not feel their concerns are being heard or represented. I will focus on creating a safer environment for students from all walks of life, especially for disadvantaged groups. The current atmosphere of complacency surrounding sexual misconduct and general inaction regarding the events that make people feel unsafe is unacceptable and must change. To achieve this, I will draw on my experience working with diverse groups of people. I was a leading member of the Organizing Committee in the Unionization effort that took place at our local Co-Op. I have also worked on numerous campaigns for local Democrats focused on creating a more equitable society. My promise to students is to remain accessible, open-minded, and engaged in creating a better college environment for all.
